The word vintage, as an adjective for clothes and accessories, came into fashion when the word old became just that: old. These days, pieces are considered vintage if they were made between 1920 and 1980. (Sorry ladies, that Chanel suit from your great aunt’s closet, circa ’94, is a great find, but it’s not quite vintage…yet.) But don’t think you have to go all Mad Men and dress like Betty Draper to capture this vibe. As Julia Roberts proved earlier this year at the Golden Globes in a vintage Yves Saint Laurent dress, what’s old, is hot, fresh and new.

Recycle: We'd bet that if all the clothing manufacturers in the world stopped producing clothes for a year that we wouldn't all wind up naked! There are plenty of clothes in existence already, so you can feel good about reusing rather than buying more.

Quality: Sweatshops full of people making massive quantities of the same thing was pretty much unique to army uniforms in past decades. Clothes were made with more care, better fabrics and with beautiful details like hand-embroidered lace and unique buttons.

Investment: Not into art? Collect clothes! Seek out designers that the old Hollywood stars used to wear – the value of the designs goes up.

Style: "Oh, I saw that on the rack at H&M" is not something we like to hear. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind unique piece that no one else will have on, you should shop vintage. It's no wonder oft-copied stars like Kate Moss like to wear vintage.

Photos: "Look for close-up pictures or ones you can zoom on so you can see fine details and stitching," says FoundByClothing.com's co-owner Arianna Schioldager.

Information: "It is important to find out as much about the piece as you can," says Arianna. "Material is particularly important. I say try and avoid polyester and other synthetics, but sometimes synthetic blends are ok!"

Measurements: "If you are going to buy online, know your own measurements!" adds Arianna.

Authenticity: "The best thing you can do is find vendors you trust," advises Arianna. "Good vintage sellers spend hours digging through mountains of clothing to discover just those pieces that have true authenticity and value. We do the hard work for you and provide shoppers with only a carefully curated selection."
